Introduction
不太 (bú tài) literally reads "not too", but it is how Chinese says "not very" or "not really". It is the polite way to say no: 我不太喜欢。(Wǒ bú tài xǐhuan.) — I don't really like it. Plain 不 (bù) is flat and can land harder than you intend.
Overview
Structure: Subj. + 不太 (bú tài) + Adj.
| Pattern | Example | Translation |
|---|---|---|
| Subj + 不太 + Adj | 我不太累。(Wǒ bú tài lèi.) | I'm not very tired. |
| 不太 + 好 | 不太好。(Bú tài hǎo.) | Not great. |
| 不太 + Verb of liking | 我不太喜欢。(Wǒ bú tài xǐhuan.) | I don't really like it. |
| 不太 + Adj(declining) | 今天不太方便。(Jīntiān bú tài fāngbiàn.) | Today isn't very convenient. |
| Plain 不 + Adj | 我不累。(Wǒ bú lèi.) | I'm not tired. |
不 (bù) or 不太 (bú tài) — how blunt do you sound?
- 我不喜欢。(Wǒ bù xǐhuan.) — I don't like it. Flat, and to some ears rude.
- 我不太喜欢。(Wǒ bú tài xǐhuan.) — I don't really like it. Softened, and what people actually say.
- 不太好 (bú tài hǎo) is the standard way to reject an idea without saying no: "that's not really a good idea."
- Tone: 太 (tài) is 4th tone, so 不 becomes bú. Always bú tài.

Usage Notes
- 不太 (bú tài) is not the negation of 太……了 (tài … le). They are two separate patterns; 不太 never takes 了 (le).
- Beyond adjectives, 不太 works with verbs that have degree: 喜欢 (xǐhuan) like, 想 (xiǎng) want, 懂 (dǒng) understand, 清楚 (qīngchu) be clear.
- 不太 (bú tài) softens a criticism, so it is the natural choice when talking about someone else's work, cooking or Chinese.
- 不太好 (bú tài hǎo) doubles as "I'm not feeling great" and "that's a bad idea" — context decides.
- In the south you will also hear 不怎么 (bù zěnme) with the same softening job: 不怎么好 (bù zěnme hǎo).
