HSK 3 Character List 2026: 284 New Recognition + 150 Writing Characters

HSK Level 3 adds 284 new recognition characters and 150 new writing characters to what you learned at Levels 1 and 2. The cumulative totals are significant: 655 characters you must recognize, and 250 you must be able to write by hand. This guide lists them all and shows you how to study them efficiently.

⚠️ Note: Under the new HSK 3.0 syllabus, the reading and writing character requirements have changed. The writing list at L3 is separate from L1+L2 — you need to learn 150 additional characters on top of the 100 from the L1/L2 combined list.

Understanding the L3 Character Requirements

👁️ Recognition (认读字)

You must be able to read and understand these characters when you see them in a reading passage or listening context. You do not need to write them from memory.

  • • L1: 246 characters
  • • L2: +125 new = 371 cumulative
  • • L3: +284 new = 655 cumulative

✍️ Writing (书写字)

You must be able to handwrite these characters correctly from memory, with correct stroke order and form. These appear in the writing section of the exam.

  • • L1+L2 combined: 100 characters
  • • L3: +150 new = 250 cumulative
  • • Note: L3 writing list is distinct from L1+L2

How to Study 434 Characters Efficiently

The jump from 371 to 655 recognition characters (and from 100 to 250 writing characters) is the hardest part of HSK 3 preparation. Use these strategies:

1

Learn characters through vocabulary, not in isolation

Every L3 character appears in at least one vocabulary word. Learn 结 through 结婚 (to get married) and 结果 (result) — context makes characters stick.

2

Group by radical to learn 10 characters at once

Characters sharing the 讠(speech) radical: 讲 谢 请 说 话 语 读 — study these together. Radicals give you the meaning category for free.

3

For writing characters, practice stroke order daily

The 150 writing characters require muscle memory. 5 minutes of daily handwriting practice is more effective than 30-minute cramming sessions.

4

Use the PASS HSK app for SRS-based character review

The app shows characters in exam-style sentence contexts and uses spaced repetition to schedule reviews just before you forget — cutting study time in half.
