✍️ Writing

Write 1–2 sentences on any topic. Fill in forms and schedules. New: write brief descriptions of experiences and opinions.

Deep Dive: 3 Key Changes in HSK 3

1. From Describing to Explaining

At HSK 1 and 2, you label and compare. At HSK 3, you explain. Tasks now require you to narrate an event with a beginning, middle, and end; explain your reasoning using 因为/所以 and 虽然/可是; and express nuanced opinions. The exam tests whether you can tell a story, not just describe a scene.

Example: Task 8 (Leisure)

Not just "I like hiking" but: "Last weekend I went hiking with my friends. We chose the mountain because the weather was perfect. Although it was tiring, I felt really refreshed afterwards."

2. Nine New Topic Domains

Nine of the 19 tasks (⭐) are completely new domains not covered in HSK 1 or 2. The most strategically important for exam prep are: Shopping (complex product comparisons), Housing (describing rooms and neighborhoods), Office Work (professional language), Environment (eco-vocabulary), Modern Society (high-speed rail, mobile payment), and Arts (performance vocabulary).

3. Grammar Complexity Doubles

HSK 3 introduces the two most notorious grammar structures in Mandarin: the 把 sentence (object displacement) and 被 passive. It also adds potential complements (能/不能: 看得见/看不见), degree complements (好极了), and 9 complex sentence patterns. Students who skip grammar study will hit a wall at this level.

把 sentence: 我把作业做完了。(I finished my homework.)

被 passive: 我的钥匙被弟弟拿走了。(My key was taken by my brother.)

Potential complement: 这道题我做不完。(I cannot finish this problem.)
