Asking "where" with "nar"

Subj. + Verb + 哪里 or 哪儿 ?

Introduction

哪儿 (nǎr) and 哪里 (nǎlǐ) both mean "where", and they are interchangeable. Like every Chinese question word, they take the slot the answer will take: 你去哪儿?(Nǐ qù nǎr?) → 我去学校。(Wǒ qù xuéxiào.)

Overview

Structure: Subj. + Verb + 哪儿 (nǎr) / 哪里 (nǎlǐ) ?

PatternExampleTranslation
Subj + 去 + 哪儿你去哪儿?(Nǐ qù nǎr?)Where are you going?
Subj + 在 + 哪儿你在哪儿?(Nǐ zài nǎr?)Where are you?
Subj + 在哪儿 + V你在哪儿工作?(Nǐ zài nǎr gōngzuò?)Where do you work?
N + 在哪儿洗手间在哪儿?(Xǐshǒujiān zài nǎr?)Where's the toilet?
从哪儿 + V你从哪儿来?(Nǐ cóng nǎr lái?)Where do you come from?

在哪儿 (zài nǎr) or 去哪儿 (qù nǎr)? The verb decides, not the question word:

  • 哪儿?(Nǐ zài nǎr?) — Where are you? You are somewhere.
  • 哪儿?(Nǐ qù nǎr?) — Where are you going? You are moving there.
  • When the place is the setting for another action, 在哪儿 comes before the verb: 你在哪儿吃饭?(Nǐ zài nǎr chī fàn?) — Where do you eat?
  • 哪儿 (nǎr) is northern and spoken; 哪里 (nǎlǐ) is southern and also what you write. The meaning is identical.

Examples

  • 你去哪儿?

    Nǐ qù nǎr?

    Where are you going?

  • 你在哪儿?

    Nǐ zài nǎr?

    Where are you?

  • 洗手间在哪儿?

    Xǐshǒujiān zài nǎr?

    Where's the toilet?

  • 你在哪儿工作?

    Nǐ zài nǎr gōngzuò?

    Where do you work?

  • 你是哪里人?

    Nǐ shì nǎlǐ rén?

    Where are you from?

  • 我们在哪儿见面?

    Wǒmen zài nǎr jiànmiàn?

    Where shall we meet?

Usage Notes

  • Word order does not move: 我去学校。(Wǒ qù xuéxiào.) → 你去哪儿?(Nǐ qù nǎr?)
  • 哪儿 (nǎr) is already a question, so no 吗 (ma). ❌ 你去哪儿吗?(Nǐ qù nǎr ma?)
  • Mind the tone: 哪 (nǎ) is 3rd tone and asks; 那 (nà) is 4th tone and means "that". One tone apart, opposite jobs.
  • 你是哪里人?(Nǐ shì nǎlǐ rén?) is the normal way to ask someone's home town — more natural than 你从哪儿来?(Nǐ cóng nǎr lái?), which asks where you have just travelled from.
  • 哪里 (nǎlǐ) doubled is a modest reply to praise: 哪里哪里。(Nǎlǐ nǎlǐ.) — "Oh, not at all."
