Introduction
The same 吧 (ba) that softens a statement also turns an order into a suggestion. 走 (Zǒu) is "Go!"; 走吧 (Zǒu ba) is "Let's go". Adding one unstressed syllable is the difference between bossing someone around and proposing something together.
Overview
Structure: Command / suggestion + 吧 (ba)
| Pattern | Example | Translation |
|---|---|---|
| 我们 + V + 吧 | 我们走吧。(Wǒmen zǒu ba.) | Let's go. |
| V + 吧 | 吃吧。(Chī ba.) | Go ahead and eat. |
| 你 + V + 吧 | 你休息吧。(Nǐ xiūxi ba.) | You should rest. |
| 别 + V + 吧 | 别去吧。(Bié qù ba.) | Let's not go. |
| 好 + 吧 / 行 + 吧(accepting) | 行吧。(Xíng ba.) | Fine, OK. |
With 吧 (ba) or without — how bossy do you sound?
- 走!(Zǒu!) — Go! A blunt order.
- 走吧。(Zǒu ba.) — Let's go / off you go. A suggestion.
- 你吃!(Nǐ chī!) — Eat! / 你吃吧。(Nǐ chī ba.) — Please, help yourself.
- 请 (qǐng) makes it polite; 吧 makes it collaborative. 请坐。(Qǐng zuò.) — Please sit down. 坐吧。(Zuò ba.) — Take a seat, go ahead.

Usage Notes
- 我们……吧 (wǒmen … ba) is the standard "let's …" frame and the most useful thing in this lesson.
- With 你 (nǐ), 吧 turns an instruction into friendly advice: 你早点儿睡吧。(Nǐ zǎodiǎnr shuì ba.) — Get an early night.
- 吧 is not 请 (qǐng). 请 belongs in formal or service situations; 吧 belongs between people who know each other.
- 一下 (yíxià) stacks nicely with 吧 to soften further: 看一下吧。(Kàn yíxià ba.) — Have a quick look.
- Answering a suggestion: 好吧 (hǎo ba) is a reluctant yes, 好啊 (hǎo a) is an enthusiastic one.
