Suggestions with "ba"

Command + 吧

Introduction

The same 吧 (ba) that softens a statement also turns an order into a suggestion. 走 (Zǒu) is "Go!"; 走吧 (Zǒu ba) is "Let's go". Adding one unstressed syllable is the difference between bossing someone around and proposing something together.

Overview

Structure: Command / suggestion + 吧 (ba)

PatternExampleTranslation
(Wǒmen zǒu ba.)Let's go.
V + 吧吃吧。(Chī ba.)Go ahead and eat.
(Nǐ xiūxi ba.)You should rest.
(Bié qù ba.)Let's not go.
(Xíng ba.)Fine, OK.

With 吧 (ba) or without — how bossy do you sound?

(Zǒu!) — Go! A blunt order.
  • 。(Zǒu ba.) — Let's go / off you go. A suggestion.
  • 你吃!(Nǐ chī!) — Eat! (Nǐ chī ba.) — Please, help yourself.
  • 请 (qǐng) makes it polite; 吧 makes it collaborative. (Qǐng zuò.) — Please sit down. (Zuò ba.) — Take a seat, go ahead.

Examples

    Wǒmen zǒu ba.

    Let's go.

    Wǒmen yìqǐ chī fàn ba.

    Let's eat together.

    Nǐ xiūxi yíxià ba.

Why don't you take a break.

    Míngtiān zài shuō ba.

    Let's talk about it tomorrow.

    Bié dānxīn ba, méi wèntí.

    Don't worry, it's fine.

    All right, we'll go tomorrow.

Usage Notes

吧 (wǒmen … ba) is the standard "let's …" frame and the most useful thing in this lesson.
  • With 你 (nǐ), 吧 turns an instruction into friendly advice: 你早点儿睡吧。(Nǐ zǎodiǎnr shuì ba.) — Get an early night.
  • 吧 is not 请 (qǐng). 请 belongs in formal or service situations; 吧 belongs between people who know each other.
  • 一下 (yíxià) stacks nicely with 吧 to soften further: 看一下吧。(Kàn yíxià ba.) — Have a quick look.
  • Answering a suggestion: 好吧 (hǎo ba) is a reluctant yes, 好啊 (hǎo a) is an enthusiastic one.
