Introduction
已经 (yǐjīng) reports a fact: 已经十二点了 (Yǐjīng shí'èr diǎn le) — it's twelve. 都……了 reports the same fact with a feeling attached — surprise, impatience, or "look at the time and you're still not in bed".
Overview
Structure: 都 (dōu) + [Time or Amount] + 了 (le)
| Pattern | Example | Translation |
|---|---|---|
(Dōu shí'èr diǎn le.) | It's twelve already! |
(Tā dōu sānshí suì le.) | He's thirty already. |
(Tā dōu chī le sān wǎn le.) | He's had three bowls already. |
(Dōu shí'èr diǎn le, nǐ hái bù shuì?) | It's midnight and you're still up? |
(Yǐjīng shí'èr diǎn le.) | It's twelve o'clock. |
This 都 (dōu) is not the "all" you already know:
- 都十二点了 (Dōu shí'èr diǎn le) means "it's already twelve", never "all twelve".
- The 了 (le) at the end is compulsory: ❌ 都十二点。(Dōu shí'èr diǎn.)
(Dōu yǐjīng shí'èr diǎn le.)
- The complaint usually lands in a second clause with 还 (hái): 都三十岁了,还不工作。(Dōu sānshí suì le, hái bù gōngzuò.)

Usage Notes
- 已经 (yǐjīng) is neutral; 都 (dōu) adds the speaker's reaction. Swap them and the sentence stays true but goes flat.
- What follows 都 (dōu) is a point on a scale — a clock time, a month, an age, a count — which is what makes "already" feel like a lot.
- Both 了 (le) are needed in the long version: 他都吃了三碗了 (Tā dōu chī le sān wǎn le) — one on the verb, one at the end.
- The second clause is where the point is made, and 还 (hái) carries it: 还不睡 (hái bù shuì)、还没来 (hái méi lái)、还这么冷 (hái zhème lěng).
- Spoken, not written: this belongs in conversation, not in a report.
