What was announced
The official notice describes the new exam as a full upgrade of the Chinese Proficiency Test, intended to give learners, teachers, and institutions a more precise and more scientific basis for assessing Chinese ability. In practical terms, it settles the one question learners have been asking since the syllabus was published in November 2025: when can I actually sit the new exam?
The answer is 13 December 2026, globally, with two separate registration deadlines depending on which format you take.

Note the gap: if you want the paper-based test, your deadline is roughly two and a half weeks earlier.

What actually changes in HSK 3.0
If you have been preparing with materials published before 2025, the 13 December exam is not the test you have been studying for. Four changes matter most.

The old 6-level scale is replaced by a “three stages, nine levels” (三级九等) structure: Elementary (1–3), Intermediate (4–6), and Advanced (7–9).

HSK 1 goes from 150 words to 300. HSK 4 now expects 2,000, and the advanced 7–9 band expects 11,000 words. Pre-2025 word lists no longer match the exam.

HSK 2.0 required no character production at all. Under 3.0 you must handwrite 50 characters at Level 1, with correct stroke order and a minimum speed.
