Adjective reduplication

AA / AABB

Introduction

Doubling a verb makes the action smaller and lighter. Doubling an adjective does the opposite: it makes the description warmer and more vivid. 慢 (màn) is "slow"; 慢慢 (mànmàn) is "nice and slow, take your time".

Overview

Structure: AA (one syllable) / AABB (two syllables)

PatternExampleTranslation
AA慢慢 (mànmàn)nice and slow
AA + 的他的脸红红的。(Tā de liǎn hónghóng de.)His face was all red.
AA + 地 + Verb你慢慢地走。(Nǐ mànmàn de zǒu.)Walk slowly.
AABB干干净净 (gāngānjìngjìng)spick and span
AABB + 地 + Verb他们高高兴兴地回家了。(Tāmen gāogāoxìngxìng de huí jiā le.)They went home happy.

Adjectives double as AABB; verbs double as ABAB:

  • ✓ 干干净净 (gāngānjìngjìng) ❌ 干净干净 (gānjìng gānjìng)
  • Verbs take the other shape: 休息休息 (xiūxi xiūxi)、看看 (kànkan).
  • A doubled adjective already means "very", so it refuses 很 (hěn): ❌ 很慢慢 (hěn mànmàn).
  • Before a verb it takes 地 (de); describing a noun it takes 的 (de): 慢慢地走 (mànmàn de zǒu) / 红红的脸 (hónghóng de liǎn).

Examples

  • 你慢慢吃,别急。

    Nǐ mànmàn chī, bié jí.

    Eat slowly, no rush.

  • 房间打扫得干干净净的。

    Fángjiān dǎsǎo de gāngānjìngjìng de.

    The room was cleaned spotless.

  • 他们高高兴兴地回家了。

Tāmen gāogāoxìngxìng de huí jiā le.

    They went home happy.

  • 她的脸红红的,很好看。

Tā de liǎn hónghóng de, hěn hǎokàn.

Her cheeks were pink and it suited her.

  • 请你好好儿休息。

    Qǐng nǐ hǎohāor xiūxi.

    Have a good rest.

  • 孩子们高高兴兴地跑出去了。

Háizimen gāogāoxìngxìng de pǎo chūqu le.

    The children ran out cheerfully.

Usage Notes

  • The everyday ones at this level: 慢慢 (mànmàn)、好好 (hǎohǎo)、早早 (zǎozǎo)、红红 (hónghóng)、高高兴兴 (gāogāoxìngxìng)、干干净净 (gāngānjìngjìng)、漂漂亮亮 (piàopiaoliàngliàng).
  • In speech the second syllable of an AA pair often rises to first tone and picks up 儿 (r): 好好儿 (hǎohāor)、慢慢儿 (mànmānr).
  • 地 (de) before a verb is often dropped in short sentences: 你慢慢吃 (nǐ mànmàn chī) is more natural than 你慢慢地吃 (nǐ mànmàn de chī).
  • The doubled form is descriptive, not comparative: ❌ 他比我慢慢 (Tā bǐ wǒ mànmàn). Use plain 慢 (màn) in a comparison.
  • A doubled adjective often carries an instruction or a wish rather than a flat description — 慢慢吃 (mànmàn chī) and 好好休息 (hǎohǎo xiūxi) are things you say to someone.
  • Not every adjective doubles, and the doubled form is not a stronger grade of the plain one — it is a different tone of voice. Stick to the common ones above until you have heard others used.
